Misunderstanding

Recently I found someone had featured my work on their blog without my permission. They emailed me explaining why they had done so and that they would remove the posting.

Today I read on Twitter "the photographer Anthony Jones forced a friend of mine to ask me to delete his work I posted here on this (blog name)...", which isn't true and below is my reply to their original email.

"Ciao Fern,

Anthony Jones is one of the few remaining photographers who still looks for the beauty in everyday objects and places, who looks for the abstract in the concrete and captures images that have the flavour of urban life. In an age of digital, he still holds steady the tiller of silver based photography and the elegant beauty of images created with a critical eye looking for the innate beauty and design in everyday life.

It's not fashionable but it is classical and though bigger, brighter and more colourful images are in vogue now, like the fads of the past they will seem old before their time and the classic modernist work of Anthony will still seem relevant, significant and beautiful.

Working in black and white with a medium format camera, Anthony walks the streets of his native London looking for momentary juxtaposition of disparate objects creating a pattern that only black and white can reproduce. His image of a London taxi in front of the Bank of England holds both the motion and constant change of urban life and the solidity of tradition and steadfastness. His work has the flavour of Paul Strand's images of New York in the 1930s and of Bill Brandt's London work a decade later. Anthony's work comes from a long tradition of the lone photographer, walking the streets with his eyes open to the moment when balance occurs and an image can be made.

His work does not speak of today or yesterday or tomorrow. Instead they speak of the abstract patterns created by the momentary conjunction of objects and places in the modern metropolis. His images are quiet reflections in the midst of a noisy city. His images both define and belie the facts of modern urban life.

Earlier in the year I was contacted by the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film (Rochester, New York) asking if I would be willing to donate a print to their benefit auction in October.

Friends of mine in New York had a box of FOURTEEN of my prints and this was a great opportunity to help one of the worlds great museums dealing with photography, I had to say YES.

All the prints are 12x16" silver gelatin prints made by me in the dark room.

'Your work really shows the shallowness of those purist types who reject digital manipulation.' Said of another photographers work.

I'm a 'purist type' but I had never thought of myself as 'shallow' because I didn't want to scan my negatives into PhotoShop and rework them, the darkroom gives me all the options I need.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film is organizing its second benefit auction of photographic objects and prints, books, and camera technology, to take place in New York City at Metropolitan Pavilion at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3. Denise Bethel, director of the Photographs Department at Sotheby's New York, will again volunteer her services as auctioneer, as she did for last year's inaugural benefit auction - which raised more than a half-million dollars in less than two hours for Eastman House.

Artists whose works will be among those in the 2011 auction include Roger Ballen, Jeff Bridges, Carl Chiarenza, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Les Krims, Steve McCurry, Barbara Morgan, Lori Nix, George Seeley, Neal Slavin, George Tice, Larry Towell, Charles Traub, Alex Webb, William Wegman, and Brian Ulrich, recipient of the 2009 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial award. All of the items auctioned are donations; none are from the Eastman House collections.

Coupled with an online component, last year's benefit auction of 300 photographic items ultimately raised more than $650,000, making it the largest fundraiser in the museum's 64-year history. More than 300 people attended last year's Eastman House benefit auction. It was "the best attended auction of the season," according to Alex Novak of iPhotoCenral.com. The online component that accompanied the Sotheby's New York auction was the auction house's largest charity auction in history. The 2010 donations came from more than 200 donors and featured most processes of photography from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

The George Eastman House 2011 Benefit Auction's live portion will be preceded by a reception, as well as a program featuring conversations with artists. An online selection also will be available. According to iGavelAuctions.com, the 2010 online lots garnered more than 1,700 bids from an international audience of collectors.

"This was by far one of the best charity auctions ever presented," said Lark Mason, president and founder of iGavelAuctions.com and a retired vice president with Sotheby's, of last year's auction. "George Eastman House's online auction was perfectly blended with the live auction component, collectively presented as a true auction exhibition at Sotheby's and with each photograph displayed with equal exposure and weight. And this is what garnered the international attention with bidders from the entire sphere of the photography world, including the United States, Europe and Asia, as they were all made aware of this sale and participated."

The challenge of the recession has required Eastman House to employ new fiscal solutions, such as this auction. Proceeds from the benefit auction help the Eastman House - the world's oldest museum of photograph - maintain its extensive collections of photographs, camera technology, motion pictures, and related literature, totaling more than 4 million objects. Eastman House also serves as an educational institution and center of preservation, offering degree-granting graduate programs in photographic and motion-picture film preservation on the site of the National Historic Landmark house, gardens, and museum.

As museums look for creative ways to raise funds, what is so impressive about this benefit is summed up by Dr. Anthony Bannon, the Ron and Donna Fielding Director of George Eastman House: "For more than 60 years George Eastman House has showcased and supported photography, and now, for this auction, we turned to the photography world to help the museum. We are overwhelmed by how enthusiastically all have embraced this effort."

This exhibition offers an insight into the work of fine art photographer Anthony Jones from the sharply observed cityscapes, dark places full of mystery to the haunting 'Black Dog' series, photographs which speak of joy and loss, taken in the city and by the sea.

His work has been published in the British Journal of Photography, Victoria and Albert Museum Magazine, widely exhibited and features in many corporate and private collections in the US and UK.

Award-winning photography book designer and curator Elizabeth Avedon recently published Anthony's work on her blog.

‘Dog Walkers, Central Park, New York’ was taken in the late 1980’s when I was still using a 35mm camera. Likely to be my first, which I purchased with some of the inheritance from my father.

This 12x16” silver gelatin print has a wide border, the largest size I was able to print at that time and a size I have come to favour. I know lately there is a taste for large prints but this is an image of a private moment which I think suits this size.

I had seen the lighter grey shape of the path between the darker grey of the hedging, which drew my eyes from bottom left to top right and I knew some figures in that space would make it. Little did I know that a woman walking her dog and another person (woman) wearing a fur coat of a similar shade to the dogs coat would complete the image.

There is a tension in the leash, being pulled by the dog towards the bent figure, the people on the left standing back in fascination. All oblivious to the comedy of the two figures dressed in fur, one human, one animal. This photograph also raises issues about the use of 'fur'.

Photography deals in 100th’s of a second and this moment only needed that spit-second to capture it.

Surface Tension

Photographs are often perceived as transparent windows onto a three-dimensional world. Yet photographs also have their own material presence as physical objects. Contemporary artists who exploit this apparent contradiction between photograph as window and photograph as object are featured in Surface Tension.

The exhibition presents thirty works that play with the inherent tension between the flatness of the photograph and the often lifelike illusion of depth. Surface Tension highlights the ways in which artists use photographic and multimedia techniques to direct our attention to the physical surface of the photograph. Among the works featured are photographs that have been purposely scratched, burned, or painted on, as well as photograms made by placing objects directly on top of a sheet of photographic paper. The exhibition is drawn entirely from the permanent collection and features several recent acquisitions and other contemporary photographs never before shown at the Museum.

Rediscovered

Above is a silver gelatin print of a photograph I took twenty years ago of Brooklyn Bridge.

The negative became lost amongst my many negatives and prints and I haven't seen it this century. Any prints I made have been sold and I didn't have any in my possession.

LONDON (REUTERS).- Celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz has arranged a deal with a private equity firm to sort out her debts, the Financial Times reported in its Tuesday edition.

The paper said Leibovitz, who has photographed everyone from Michelle Obama to Britain's Queen Elizabeth, has lined up real estate investment firm Colony Capital as a sole creditor to help manage her finances and market her work.

"We will be partners in managing her assets and her business so that Annie can spend her time and focus in pursuing her passion as only she can do," Tom Barrack, founder of Los-Angeles-based Colony was cited as saying in the FT.

The firm will allow Leibovitz to hold onto the rights of more than 100,000 photographs and is considering plans to hold traveling photographic exhibitions, the FT said.

"We will be working on new projects and I will have the support and freedom necessary for nurturing my work and preserving my archive," Leibovitz was cited as saying in the FT.

Leibovitz got into financial difficulties last year when Art Capital Group threatened to sue her and seize control of her entire collection and two properties for violating the terms of $24 million loan.

The two parties reached a deal last September allowing the photographer to buy back control of her work that had been put up as collateral.

Leibovitz is perhaps best known for a portrait of a naked John Lennon and a clothed Yoko Ono taken on the same day the former Beatle was shot dead.

Matthew Marks Gallery presents "Robert Adams: Summer Nights, Walking". The exhibition consists of 50 photographs of nocturnal landscapes Robert Adams made between 1976 and 1982 near his home in Longmont, Colorado, on the eastern ridge of the Rocky Mountains.

Robert Adams leads the viewer outwards in these photographs from the populated center of the suburban town towards the rustic plain and distant Rocky Mountains. During his evening perambulations the photographer captured trees and houses, mountains and streets, fields and sidewalks between dusk and approaching dark. Lit by the setting sun, street lamps, and moonlight, his compositions are never conventionally beautiful. They vacillate between quiet foreboding and tranquil domesticity and, as the photographer has expressed in his own writing, attempt to capture the timelessness and peace of warm summer evenings.

Robert Adams first showed photographs from this series in 1985. Recently, he said of editing his night pictures that "when I have looked again at the photographs that I might have chosen but did not, it has seemed to me that if I had included a wider variety, the result would have been, though less harmonious, more convincing, closer to our actual experience of wonder, anxiety and stillness." The expanded group of images in this exhibition is at times unsettling, conveying the menacing and occasionally hostile attitudes of suspicious onlookers the photographer encountered while walking and evoking a sense of unease that is often part of our nighttime experience.

Robert Adams (b. 1937) has been photographing the American landscape for almost 50 years. In 1989 the Philadelphia Museum of Art organized a retrospective of Adams's work, and in 1997 his photographs were included in Documenta X. The Yale University Art Gallery, which holds Adams's complete body of work to date, has organized a new retrospective exhibition of his work that opens at the Vancouver Art Gallery in September of this year before traveling to several international venues. Adams was awarded a MacArthur Foundation fellowship in 1994 and received the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in 2009.

Eve Arnold is to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Sony World Photography Awards. She will be honoured at the annual awards ceremony in Cannes on 22 April, the day after her 98th birthday, amongst leading figures of the international photographic community.

Scott Gray, Managing Director of the World Photography Organisation comments: “Over such an incredible life and long career it is difficult to imagine what Eve Arnold did not capture on film, and what she did capture are some of the most abiding images of our time. We are proud and honoured to celebrate her life and work at this year’s Sony World Photography Awards.”

Zelda Cheatle, curator and close friend of Eve Arnold, added: “Eve is utterly delighted to be honoured with this award. For someone who began working in a tough world she never lost sights of her femininity and used her intelligence and powers of observation to succeed. I am still full of admiration for someone who shows such determination, perseverance and courage.”

Eve Arnold began working as a photographer in the early 1950s. Having worked at a film processing plant in New York, and then studying under Alexei Brodovitch, the art director of Harper’s Bazaar, she approached Magnum with a series of work she had taken of migrant labourers in Long Island. She was one of the first women to be taken on by the agency, first as a stringer and then, in 1954, as a full member, working under the tutorage of founders Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. Fascinated by social commentary from the start, one of her earliest photo stories to be published was of black models at a fashion show in Harlem. She became involved in the civil rights movement, with Malcolm X personally choosing her to follow him on his tours. From early in her career, Arnold photographed a host of stars including Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Marlene Deitrich and Isabella Rossellini all of whom became close friends. She travelled the world extensively, photographing in China, Russia, South Africa and Afghanistan. She moved to London in 1960 with her son and became a regular contributor to the Sunday Times. Eve Arnold, who still lives in London, continued to photograph well into the nineties and addressed writing her books, in particular In Retrospect and Film Journal, editing her work and preparing all her archive. She captioned, dated and signed every one of her prints (amounting to thousands) and continued to be an active voting member of Magnum.

A retrospective of Eve Arnold’s work, drawn from the Tosca Photography Fund Collection and curated by Zelda Cheatle, will be exhibited in Cannes (22-27 April) as part of the World Photography Festival which will include workshops, portfolio reviews, student programmes and talks from World Photography Academy members and respected figures of the international photographic community.

The accolade, which was awarded last year to the French photographer, Marc Riboud, was created to honour a photographer for a lifetime of widely recognised and critically acclaimed work.

NEW YORK—Christie’s has announced plans to auction 67 Irving Penn photographs from the collection of his former assistant, Patricia McCabe. McCabe received the photographs over the course of her more than 30 years with Penn, and many of the prints feature special inscriptions to her.

Penn died last year at the age of 92, after a career in which he established himself as one of America’s premiere photographers, crafting iconic fashion photos for magazines like Vogue, where he began his career in the 1940s, and shooting memorable portraits of ordinary people, artists, and celebrities, such as husband-and-wife painters Jacob Lawrence and Gwen Knight, composer Igor Stravinsky, and supermodel Kate Moss.

While buyers will have to wait until April 14 to bid on works from McCabe’s collection, they can begin to whet their appetite at the end of this month, when the photographs go on display at Christie’s headquarters in New York.

Paul Getty Museum announced today a gift of 52 photographs by acclaimed Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo (1902–2002) from his compelling work in Mexico from the 1920s to the 1970s. The photographs are a gift from Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser of Los Angeles, who have continued their tradition of generous giving to the Getty since 2000, bolstering the Museum’s already stellar holdings of photographs by the artist to 247.

Over the past ten years, the Getty Museum’s Alvarez Bravo holdings have grown steadily through regular donations by Mr. Greenberg and Ms. Steinhauser. During this time, they have contributed one hundred works by the artist, as well as sixty-one pictures by Alvarez Bravo's one-time student, Graciela Iturbide.

Mr. Greenberg and Ms. Steinhauser have also assisted the museum in building its collection of significant post-war American photography with major gifts of work by Eliot Porter, William Eggleston, and Carrie Mae Weems. In addition to their thoughtful donations to the Museum’s photographs department, they are active members of the Getty Museum's Photographs Council, which Ms. Steinhauser chaired from 2007 to 2009.

"Dan and Susan have been extremely generous donors to the Getty Museum, both in works of art and in the commitment of time to support our Department of Photographs,” says Michael Brand, director of the J. Paul Getty Museum. “This most recent donation of fifty-two photographs by Manuel Alvarez Bravo not only strengthens our collection of his work, but greatly enhances our holdings of photographs from Mexico. We cannot thank Dan and Susan enough for helping us build our extraordinary collection and being such good friends of the Museum.”

PARIS.- The Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation opened an exhibition of approximately 100 photographs taken by Robert Doisneau. The photographs have been gatheres from the Foundations collections and other museum and collections. The exhibition aims to show the viewer the world Doisneau wanted to prove existed.

The catalog, published in French by Steidl, is accompanied by a text written by Agnès Sire and of a review made by art critic Jean-François Chevrier in 1983.

"There are several photographs in this show that have always been presented in other exhibitions, but there are others that have never before been seen,"said the curator Agnès Sire to EFE.

Robert Doisneau (April 14, 1912 - April 1, 1994) was a French photographer noted for his frank and often humorous depictions of Paris street life.

Robert Doisneau was one of France's most popular and prolific reportage photographers. He was known for his modest, playful, and ironic images of amusing juxtapositions, mingling social classes, and eccentrics in contemporary Paris streets and cafes. Influenced by the work of Kertész, Atget, and Cartier-Bresson, in over 20 books Doisneau has presented a charming vision of human frailty and life as a series of quiet, incongruous moments. Doisneau has written: "The marvels of daily life are exciting; no movie director can arrange the unexpected that you find in the street."

Among his most recognizable work is Le baiser de l'hôtel de ville (Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville), a photo of a couple kissing in the busy streets of Paris. The identity of the couple was a mystery until 1993, when Denise and Jean-Louis Lavergne took Doisneau to court for taking the picture without their knowledge. This action prompted Doisneau to reveal that he posed the shot in 1950 using actor/models Françoise Bornet and Jacques Carteaud. Françoise was given an original print as part of her payment. In April 2005 she sold the print for 155,000 € at an auction. Paris was one of the favorite photographic subjects of Doisneau.

Doisneau's work gives unusual prominence and dignity to children's street culture; returning again and again to the theme of children at play in the city, unfettered by parents. His work treats their play with seriousness and respect. In his honour, and owing to this, there are several Ecole Primaire (Primary Schools) names after him. An example is at Veretz (Indre-et-Loire).

Handling, Storage, Display, Conservation & Restoration

Introduction Questions regarding the preservation of photographs date back to the very birth of the medium in the early 19th century. The early inventors were initially plagued by the inability to fix images recorded by a camera and suffered intense frustration as their experiments were destroyed upon exposure to light. While these obstacles were eventually resolved, the photographic literature has remained filled with research and commentary on other permanence issues such as the yellowing of highlights and the importance of clearing residual fix.

Today the physical and chemical properties of photographs are better understood and there are numerous tools and resources available to collectors to insure that the photographs in their possession remain in good condition. Understanding what a photograph is, in terms of its material make up, is the key to promoting preservation. Photographs are combinations of organic material (such as paper, gelatin and albumen) and inorganic material (most notably silver). An albumen print cross section viewed with a scanning electron microscope at 1,000 X magnification The albumen coating, binding the silver-based image, and the paper base are clearly visible. For example, an albumen print from the 1870's will have an image formed by silver particles bound to a paper base by a coating of hen's egg white (albumen) just as a typical "black and white" photograph from the 1950's will have a silver-based image to a paper base by gelatin. Reduced to this level of analysis, it is common sense that photographs can be fairly fragile given improper storage, handling and display conditions. Everyone knows silver can tarnish, paper can develop creases, tears and folds, and that gelatin can become discolored, brittle, and provide an excellent source of nutrition for mold, insects and other pests. The job of the collector is to understand the threats and to respond through some basic preservation measures.

Handling The sheer volume of photographs produced over time and their ubiquitous presence in our culture can lead to some poor handling habits when it comes to vintage, collectable, prints. For example, as photographic prints age and deteriorate, mounts, paper bases and binders can become increasingly brittle. A gelatin silver print by Manual Alvarez Bravo. The lost corner and the cracks in the gelatin across the upper right corner are the results of poor handling.As a print becomes more brittle there is a greater tendency to form creases, tears and to develop cracks in gelatin and albumen binders. Bending and flexing a vintage print should be avoided as much as possible. Whenever practical, a secondary support, like a good quality piece of mat board or heavyweight polyester sleeve, should be placed behind a print during handling so stresses are more equally distributed across the plane of a print. Finger oils and perspiration not only can leave marks on the surface of a print but can, over time, cause severe staining. Photographs should be handled carefully at the edges only. When this sort of minimal handling is not possible, collectors should wear cotton gloves.

Storage For storage, multiple photographic prints can be stacked flat in boxes. Vertical storage, in file cabinets or hanging storage, should be avoided as photographs have an increased tendency to warp and bend. Whenever possible each print should be stored individually in its own sleeve or mat. Sleeves made of clear polyester (often marketed under the DuPont trade name Mylar® D) or polypropylene (used for certain types of top-loaders) are good choices since the materials are stable and inert. Mats should be made of four ply paperboard. The vertical stain and image fading in the center of this albumen print was caused by poor quality, acidic backing materials.Once matted the face of the photograph should be covered with a polyester or paper overleaf to help protect against abrasions. Any enclosure, including sleeves, mats, overleafs, and boxes, should meet or exceed the benchmarks established by the Photographic Activity Test (P.A.T.). An International Standards Organization (ISO) standard, the P.A.T. is an objective method for determining the acceptability of enclosures used in contact with photographic images. Most reputable "archival" vendors will have information on which of their products pass the P.A.T. A common mistake among beginning collectors is using inexpensive materials to house photographs. This mistake can have disastrous results as many materials found on the market today for the hosing photographs, like some "magnetic" albums and plastic enclosures can actually cause irreversible damage to a photograph in a matter of years. The minimal extra money and time spent finding a reputable vendor of archival materials, asking questions and carefully selecting appropriate materials can be a crucial investment.

Among the variables that impact the stability of photographs, temperature and relative humidity are the most significant. Photographs should be stored in dry, cool locations. Storage in hot attics and humid basements should be avoided at all costs. Warm storage areas accelerate the natural aging processes of photographs, promoting embrittlement, and staining. This hand colored gelatin silver print has been staining by mold after prolonged exposure to elevated relative humidity.Likewise humidity also causes embrittlement and staining but is also known to accelerate the fading of silver-based images and discoloration of albumen and gelatin binders. High relative humidity can also cause mold to form on the surface of photographs and can attract insects and other pest that find the cellulose and protein components of a photograph to be an appealing food source. To the extent possible the temperature and relative humidity in a storage area should be stable from day to day and throughout the year. In practice, maintaining a stable environment can be very challenging but storage in sleeves and boxes helps buffer large swings in humidity. For the storage of black and white prints the ISO specifies conditions that do not exceed 50% relative humidity (RH) and temperature ranges that do not exceed 45OF. Geared toward large institutional collections, adhering to these parameters may be impractical for most individual collectors. Nevertheless the point is clear: photograph collections benefit from storage in cool dry conditions.

Display
Collectors naturally want to display their most significant acquisitions. When it comes to photographs, however, long-term display always carries a price. Exposure to light can cause a progressive yellowing and sometimes cracking of albumen and gelatin binders For the display of photographs, many museums will lower light levels close to the minimal threshold of human color perception. While such low light levels may be unacceptable for most individual collectors, controlling light, by reducing the duration and intensity of exposure, should be a top priority. The overall discoloration on the highlights of this Rose and Hopkins platinum print was caused by long-term exposure to intense sunlight.Simple steps, like turning off lights and drawing drapes during the day when a room is unoccupied, can have a huge payback in terms of increased image stability. Use of ultraviolet filters on windows or for framing can have a significant impact on reducing damage due to light exposure. Like museums, private collectors should also consider rotating displays so no single photograph remains on display on a permanent basis.

Working with Conservators. Over time most serious collectors will assemble a "team" of experts upon which they can rely for guidance. A conservator should be part of this team. Conservators specializing in photographic materials are trained to provide in-depth advice when it comes to handling, storage and display issues. Conservators are also able to identify active, ongoing deterioration problems and develop treatments to stabilize the condition of photographs. In many cases the appearance of a photograph can be degraded by problems, such as staining, surface dirt, and losses to an edges or corner. In such instances a conservator can propose a treatment to safely improve the appearance of a photograph without undermining its long-term stability. Collectors can contact The American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) for a publicly accessible database listing conservators sorted by their geographical location and area of expertise. Over time, working with a conservator can help collectors build a more sophisticated level of discernment identifying which condition problems can be successfully treated and which can not. This type of knowledge can be a significant edge in the marketplace where knowing the actual condition of a print and its prospects for long-term stability can be the difference between a good investment and an expensive lesson in photograph conservation.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Dennis Stock, 81, on Monday night. A photographer with Magnum Photos for nearly 50 years, he was one of the first Americans to join the agency. Dennis was particularly well known for his intimate and now iconic photographs of James Dean for Life magazine, which were taken shortly before the young actor's untimely death in 1955. He’ll also be remembered for his unique and often atmospheric photographs of the New Orleans jazz scene of the late 1950’s, which were published in his book, Jazz Street. In the 1960's, he documented the world of the counterculture, ultimately publishing the noted monograph, California Trip. Later in life, he began to work more extensively in color, attracted especially to the natural world. Dennis was the author of 27 books and his work is in museum collections around the world, including the International Center of Photography, New York, the Chicago Institute of Art, and the Musée d’Arte Moderne de la ville de Paris. He will be greatly missed.

Silhouette of Anthony Jones by Alison Russell

Last night I went to a private evening opening of a shop in the Burlington Arcade and met Alison Russell who entertained shoppers by hand-cutting their portraits in silhouette.

From Alison I leant that 'silhouettes' are named after Etienne de Silhouette (1709-67), the Controller-General of France who used to 'amuse himself at drawing-room gatherings by cutting profiles from paper'.

This was an inexpensive way of creating portraits which came to an end with the invention of photography.

London Art Fair

Now in its 6th year Art Projects has become a must-see part of the Fair. In this area collectors will find solo and group displays and large scale installation from an exciting forum of international galleries drawn from New York, Dresden, Munich, Mexico City and London.

The project by ORDINARY-LIGHT Photography examines the early history of the atomic and nuclear bomb programmes. Rather than simply focus on the bomb itself the project explores the time in which the development of these weapons occurred. Alongside original and vintage photography capturing the moment the bombs exploded are period newspaper clippings, diaries, books, 16mm film and governmental advice given in preparation for a possible nuclear attack.

Photo50 is a showcase for contemporary photography with artists selected by a distinguished panel including Ekow Eshun (Artistic Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts), Anita Zabludowicz (Collector and founder of 176 / Zabludowicz Collection, London), David Campany (writer and lecturer on the history and theory of photography) and a team from Goldsmith's MFA curating programme. Fifty works will be shown - all for sale - and the members of the panel will champion the artists they have nominated.

A Photography Focus Day on Wednesday 13 January will feature a series of discussions and tours dedicated to contemporary photography.

Remembrance

This poster is from a series currently on display around London (and maybe the whole country) asking people to buy poppies in support of the armed forces and remembrance of those who gave their lives in wars since the First World War.

I don't know if the people in this photograph are models but this poster powerfully illustrates how a photograph can keep a loved one in our lives after they have departed.

I was in the barbers yesterday, after posting this piece and they had the radio on. The commentator said the 'family' in this campaign was real and NOT models.

The Affordable Art Fair is a selling exhibition.

That may sound like an odd statement but these are hard times. One wonders when visiting art fairs and exhibitions if the selling happens somewhere else, in secret and not on the day.

I was invited to the fair by a friend whose work was being exhibited by a gallery and I was very impressed by the number of actual sales taking place inside.

As I left the venue, making my way through Battersea Park, I saw people carrying artwork wrapped with the fairs distinctive pink wrapping tape and even two men stopped their sportscar to reposition a huge package that risked falling out.

BEING IN SOUTH WEST LONDON was a perfect opportunity to visit an old friend and see how she was doing.

Even in 1998 when I took my photograph of Battersea Power Station, the structure wasn't in the best of health but since then the area and building have decayed so much that it has become a ruin.

This is a story which is very close to my heart and spleen, I refer to a union website using my photograph of Battersea Power Station without my permission despite previously paying for its use. Click on UNION in the labels list, ANYWAY...

Shepard Fairey's claim that he had the right to use a news photo to create his famous Barack Obama "HOPE" poster became a widely watched court case about fair use that now appears to have nearly collapsed.

By Friday night, his attorneys — led by Anthony Falzone, executive director of the Fair Use Project at Stanford University — said they intend to withdraw from the case and said the artist had misled them by fabricating information and destroying other material.

Fairey himself admitted that he didn't use The Associated Press photo of Obama seated next to actor George Clooney he originally said his work was based on.

You know, the last week has gone so quickly, since the art fair in Islington closed and certainly a time for reflection.

The event covered photography, illustration, printmaking and graphics and as I thought, those showing photography like mine, from the darkroom was thin on the ground.

I had a discussion with one photographer who was showing both colour and black and white digital prints. She was proud of one of her excellent digital black and white prints which was better then one of her resin darkroom prints. We compared it to one of my bromide prints and she had to concede that mine was superior.

This is my only issue with digital, so far I have not seen a digital print which when placed side-by-side can match a silver gelatin print.

Irving Penn 1917-2009

I have just read of the passing of Irving Penn. The best way to honour the passing of a great artist is to talk about (and appreciate) their work.

This is his 1977 portrait of photographer Cecil Beaton from the 1984 monograph IRVING PENN by John Szarkowski.

It is a perfect example of Penn's keen eye for composition, light and STYLE, the kind of qualities I try to bring to my portraits of buildings.

Classic Photo

The 2010 dates and venue have recently been announced for Classic Photo, part of the Watercolour, Works on Paper show.

3-7th February 2010, The Science Museum (Level 2), Exhibition Road, London SW7 2DD.

Classic Photo brings together a small group of specialist dealers in vintage 19th and 20th Century photographic images, side by side with the work of contemporary photographers.

I'll update this when I have more information.

"Decorex International is at the heart of the London design community, with sensational new designs and presented in a unique setting for professional interior designers, retailers, architects and hotel designers..."

Yesterday afternoon I visited the Decorex interiors fair at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, firstly to visit designers who I had worked with but also to gauge to what extent photographs were being used by the interiors community.

I was very pleased to see the cafe gallery was decorated with a wall of black and white photographs, not unlike my own. It also was very encouraging to find that the use of photographs in design projects and stands was pretty widespread.

Horst and the calendar girls

The posters for the current West End show 'Calendar Girls' (based on the film of the same name) feature the cast posed from classic photographs.

My favourite is this retake of Horst P Horst's Mainbocher Corset, 1939 (above, left) and the orginal, below from the book horst, photographs of a decade, 1944.

The other photograph in this poster is a retake of Lewis Morley's 1963 photograph of Christine Keeler.

John Jabez Edwin Mayall (1813-1901) was an English daguerreotypist who lived and worked in England and the US.

J W M Turner (1775-1851) visited Mayall’s studio on the Strand between 1847 and 1849. The two men discussed photography, in particular Mayall’s photographs of Niagara Falls and the way that photography dealt with light and shadow.

It would have been fascinating to have sat in on those meetings and to speculate how Turner’s interest in photography might have developed, had he been a younger man.

The Candid Gallery, which I have just visited for the first time is a raw, Bohemian warehouse of a space which reminds me of many venues that I have shown my work in the beginning.

I can see it peopled by artists pushing back the boundaries and an audience of hungry art fans relishing these experiences.

What those artists and visitors to the Islington Contemporary Art and Design Fair will think of my style of traditional photography is going to be interesting to see.

You step from the bustle of Oxford Street into what looks like the seedy entrance of Ramilies Street. Along the way, on the right is the Photographers Gallery and before you know it you are smothered in the charm and warmth of Kertesz's beautifully composed humanist photographs.

Many of the photographs in this exhibition (Andre Kertesz : On Reading) are vintage prints and fine ones too. This is street photography from a more gentle school and skillfully executed by one of my favourites. Well worth a visit.

Taken between 1915 and 1980 in the many places he lived, visited and worked – including Argentina, France, Hungary, UK and USA – Kertész’s photographs are a celebration of the absorptive power and pleasure of reading.

The exhibition runs until 4th October.

John Szarkowski said about Kertesz's work:
"In addition to this splendid and original quality of formal invention, there is in the work of Kertesz another quality less easily analyzed, but surely no less important. It is a sense of the sweetness of life, a free and childlike pleasure in the beauty of the world and the preciousness of sight."

I had quite forgot about him (Google his name, if you don't know him and enjoy the work and life of this fascinating character!) and was glad to have rediscovered him!

Underground Sign

This view presented itself to me as I was walking around the city of London, instantly I was drawn to the iconic underground sign and the long shadow cast by the afternoon sun.

Something else that made it an easy target for my lens was the cross work pattern that reminded me of a Charles Rennie Macintosh design.

Originally published as a serial between 1844 and 1846, The Pencil of Nature was the first book to be illustrated entirely with photographs. Early enthusiast William Henry Fox Talbot hoped to spur public interest in photography—but was forced to cease publication after just six installments. In its time, The Pencil of Nature was a commercial disaster.

150 years later, Talbot’s Pencil is recognized as a major contribution to both the history of photography and the development of the book. Talbot not only invented the calotype process—the precursor to today’s film cameras—he transformed his everyday subjects into art. Architectural studies and local landscapes, still-lifes, close-ups, and even a single, painstakingly executed portrait—Talbot’s twenty-four prints remain strikingly modern and quietly beautiful.
